What is Barcode Verification?
Barcode verification assesses the quality of a printed barcode. This process is typically performed on a product’s final packaging or artwork proof using a barcode verifier machine. The verifier scans the barcode at various angles and generates an ISO grade (ranging from 4 to 0 or A to F) on a Barcode Verification Report.
An acceptable report is often required by major retailers before accepting products.
Why is Barcode Verification Important?
Barcode accuracy is critical for seamless supply chain operations. Poor-quality barcodes that fail to scan can disrupt operations, leading to:
- Rejection of products by retailers.
- Financial penalties or loss of sales.
- Additional costs in correcting errors.
Most retailers require barcodes to achieve an ISO grade of 1.5 (C) or higher for acceptance.
Common Reasons for Failed Barcode Verification
- Quiet Zones Altered: The white space around the barcode is reduced or removed.
- Truncation: The barcode height is significantly reduced.
- Colour Issues: Black bars on a white background are ideal; improper colour combinations can cause failures.
- Poor Print Resolution: The barcode is blurry or lacks sharpness.
- Invalid Encoding: Incorrect check digits or non-standard formats.
- Placement Errors: Barcodes placed on corners, curved surfaces, or obscured by packaging materials like shrink wrap.
- Material Effects: Printing substrates causing barcode distortion, shrinkage, or print bleed.

In Singapore, GS1 Singapore provides Barcode Verification Services, even for non-members.

Key Notes for Barcodes Supplied by Barcode Savers
- The EAN-13, UPC-A, and ITF-14 barcode images we supply will pass verification if:
- Printed correctly within the 80%–200% magnification range.
- Not modified or adversely altered during graphic design.
- Properly printed barcodes often achieve the highest ISO grade (4) with a 100% scan rate on GS1 Verification Reports.
Important Consideration:
- Verification Reports from GS1 will mark the “Validity of GS1 Company Prefix” as “N/A” for reseller barcodes. This means your company is not a direct GS1 member.
- Some large retailers may require direct GS1 membership and reject reseller barcodes.
